Early Watercolours and Collage

In September 1979, I moved from Canada to Ecuador. I was so eager to make the move, I didn't even wait for my graduation ceremony at the University of Guelph. As I mention in my bio, I wanted to develop my art away from mainstream influences. It turned out to be the right move. I started making art my second week in Quito, painting out my frustration at not knowing the language, the city or the customs, The first piece below, "Blocked by Mountains" was the result. I moved to Guayaquil in 1980, where I had my first solo show. I travelled frequently between Quito and the coast as shown in the three pieces that follow. In late 1981 I moved to the central coast of Manabi to dedicate myself to art full-time. Though I've never been a realistic painter, my tropical surroundings are clearly evidenced in the work I produced there.
I moved back to the Quito area in the late 80's where I landed in a magical house in the country, owned by Shirma Guayasamin, a daughter of the famous artist, Oswaldo Guayasamin. They even dropped by one afternoon and the great maestro took the time to actually look at my work and comment positively.
The 90's were perhaps the most productive decade of my career. Being near the capital, I had an audience and many galleries and museums willing to show my work. As a result, almost all the pieces shown here have been sold.
